Normal pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), is commonly treated through neurological surgery, where the cerebrospinal fluid is diverted from the ventricles of the brain or to the peritoneal space or to the right atrium of the heart, through a silicon tube.
In obstructive hydrocephalus, opening a passage between the chambers of the brain, through endoscopic surgery to create an internal by pass, is often enough.
Treatment results are good, with considerable improvement in symptoms and quality of life in 50-80% of the patients. Surgical technique has improved over the years and complications are to date approximately 20%, a large proportion being less serious, easily adjusted without surgery.
